International Missions

Bringing therapeutic arts programming to refugee camps around the globe

"Artistic expression is an indicator of and a contributor to vibrant, resilient and healthy societies. Therefore, investment in the arts means investment in the well-being and social cohesion of both forcibly displaced people and their host communities."

    - World Health Organization

The Campfire Project was founded on the values of shared humanity and an ethic of action. This brought the first team of “Campers” (Campfire volunteers) to Greece in 2017, at the peak of the Syrian refugee crisis, and propelled us to supporting displaced communities from across the globe.

With each international mission, we partner with a humanitarian aid organization, as well as local community members, already engaging in the humanitarian crisis at hand. Our 3-4 week missions aim to provide a transformative experience - reducing isolation, cultivating connection and community, providing tools to better manage emotions and the impact of trauma, and bringing joy. We also acknowledge the importance of longevity for fostering deeper impact, and therefore dedicate time during each mission to training local staff in therapeutic arts approaches and facilitating their continued engagement in the camps after the culmination of the mission. Alongside education and training, we gather funds to leave behind needed supplies - ranging from diapers, to winter coats, to games and toys.
